In a groundbreaking achievement, the Biomedical Unit at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Gusau has successfully designed and fabricated a phototherapy machine, a first for the history of the Centre. This machine has significantly enhanced newborn care at the hospital by providing a treatment for jaundice.
The Head of Clinical Services, Dr. Umar Abdullahi (FMCP), recently accepted the machine from Engr. Sanusi Garba M. Buhu, team leader of the fabricators.
In his remarks, the Head of Clinical Services noted that this achievement demonstrates the Centre's commitment to providing quality healthcare services and its dedication to innovation and excellence. The success of this project showcases the expertise and hard work of the biomedical engineers at FMC Gusau and sets a precedent for future innovations at the Centre.
Dr. Umar praised the engineers for their contribution to the Centre and encouraged them to continue their outstanding work. Furthermore, he assured them of the Management's willingness to provide support for their innovative endeavors in developing additional essential equipment for the Center.
The machine was officially handed over to the Paediatrics Department and was designed to treat jaundice in newborns. The handing-over ceremony was attended by the matron in charge of the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU), Mrs Sabikatu Audi, representative of the Head of Department (HOD) of Paediatrics, Dr. Ochai John Eche, and Engr. Sanusi Garba M. Buhu from the Biomedical Unit.
During a visit to the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) by the FMC News Bulletin, a nurse on duty shared a remarkable observation about the newly fabricated phototherapy machine. According to the nurse, the recently fabricated phototherapy machine has demonstrated superior performance compared to the imported machines presently in use at the Centre. Specifically, the nurse observed that the machine has achieved remarkable results in treating jaundice in newborns, with a clearance rate of just two days.
