New members to steer the affairs of Anti Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) of the Federal Medical Centre, Gusau have been inaugurated and inducted at the Centre's board room by the Chairman, Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission, Dr Musa Adamu Aliyu (SAN).
Inaugurating the members of the Unit, the ICPC Chairman, represented by the Katsina state Resident Commissioner, who is also in charge of Zamfara, Mahdi Muhammad Lawal, urged the newly sworn in leaders to uphold unto the commission's expectations of fighting and eliminating corruption practices in FMC, Gusau.
The Chairman has noted that "the ACTU initiation is not intended to subsume the authority of management under its wings, rather it is to compliment them, especially in mainstreaming a positive anti-corruption culture where it may be lacking," he said.
Earlier on, Dr Aliyu has requested for the full support of the Management of the FMC Gusau in terms of providing enabling environment, funding and incorporation of the ACTU members in the Centre's different standing committees.
The chairman has further warned that "those who are stepping into this onerous assignment should not use their office as a tool to witch hunt or victimise other staff, rather you should all work hard to gain the support of the management and staff of this hospital.
The Centre's Management and the new ACTU members were also advised by the representative of the ICPC Chairman to consider gender while nominating ACTU members always.
On the other hand, Dr Aliyu has congratulated the Medical Director and Centre for taking first position in Nigeria at the Ethics and Compliance Scorecard and ACTU effectiveness index by ICPC in 2023.
In a remark, the medical director Dr. Bello A. Mohammed (MBBS, FWACS) hinted that the Centre has been using carrot and stick to bring corruption to the barest minimum. The Medical Director maintained that while they punish any staff found wanting, they also appreciate efforts of the hard working staff. Dr Bello explained that part of the Centre's efforts to prevent corruption was the introduction of an automation system, where all the hospital activities are automated, with the exception of the administrative activities which will come on stream in due course. The medical director pointed that in addition to efficiency, the automation has reduced both the corruption tendencies and patient waiting period in the hospital.
It could be recalled that the new ACTU members have been nominated after the expiration of the tenure of previous ACTU members, in 2024. The tenure of the new leadership is three years, with a possible renewal in 2027.
Some of the new members inaugurated include Bar. M. A. Sani as chairman. Other members of the committee include Ibrahim M. Anka, Abubakar Tukur and Aliyu Garba Bungudu. The committee also has Shuaibu Uba Abba and Haruna Ya'u Sunge as members while Ibrahim H. Kankia serves as the secretary of the committee.
