Umar Abdullahi, MBBS, FMCP

Dr Umar Abdullahi is a seasoned Consultant Physician and Cardiologist with more than 20 years of experience in clinical care, medical education, and healthcare leadership. As the current Head of Clinical Services and Training (HOCS), Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Gusau, he is in charge of clinical governance, managing service delivery across departments and ensuring the institution’s ongoing excellence in postgraduate and undergraduate medical training. His work as HOCS combines critical thinking with compassionate leadership, as he manages operational systems, supervises clinical teams and coordinates training programmes for interns, residents, students on SIWES and clinical students.

As a connoisseur of health administration, he has held several leadership roles in the Centre including Deputy Head of Clinical Services, Head of Internal Medicine Department and head of Cardiology Unit. Dr. Abdullahi was Chairman of MDCAN, Zamfara State Chapter (2019–2021) and has contributed to national service as medical team leader during the 2018 and 2019 Hajj operations. His leadership journey began early, holding key student leadership roles during his formative years.

A dedicated academic and medical educator with a strong footprint in clinical research and public health scholarship, Dr. Umar Abdullahi has authored and co-authored over 30 peer-reviewed articles in respected national and international journals; and has presented more than 30 scholarly papers at various scientific conferences and professional forums, earning widespread recognition for the depth and relevance of his works. His passion for nurturing future healthcare professionals is evident in his long-standing commitment to medical training. From 2009 to 2016, he played a key role in the education of seven cohorts of medical graduates, many of whom have since advanced into postgraduate fellowship programs. Since 2016, he has remained actively involved in training postgraduate candidates for Fellowship Examinations, instructing basically 66 house officers each year. Similarly, Dr. Abdullahi is a Visiting Consultant Physician/Cardiologist at Ahmad Sani Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital and a Visiting Senior Lecturer at Federal University, Gusau, Zamfara State.

 

As a physician, Dr Abdullahi’s impact does not stop at the hospital gates. He plays a vital role in emergency health response strategies as Head of the Case Management Pillar within the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre, Ministry of Health, Zamfara State and head of case management in Zamfara State during the outbreak of meningitis in 2017, Cholera 2017-2019, Lassa fever in 2018 and 2019, Yellow fever in 2018, Measles in 2018 and 2019, Corona virus disease (COVID – 19) in 2020 and 2021, Cholera in 2021 among of others. He is also a member of the Consilium of Experts on Multidrug-Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) — tackling one of the most pressing public health issues with evidence-informed insight.

Dr. Umar Abdullahi is an active member of several key professional bodies such as Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), Nigerian Cardiac Society (NCS), and the Nigerian Hypertension Society (NHS). He also belongs to the Islamic Medical Association of Nigeria (IMAN) and a registered professional manager with the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM), (Chartered).

Born in Gusau, Dr. Abdullahi brings homegrown dedication to a national calling in internal medicine coupled with educational journey laced up with some of the finest institutions: from earning his MBBS at Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, to completing his Fellowship (FMCP) with the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and most recently, refining his expertise with the University of South Wales (2020–2022).

Outside of his professional pursuits, the interests of Dr Abdullahi reflect his curiosity, love for learning, and connection to his community as he enjoys reading academic and historical texts, traveling and farming.
