Dr. Bello A. Mohammed is a highly respected Nigerian obstetrician and gynaecologist, administrator, and healthcare leader. Born in Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State, he has consistently distinguished himself in both clinical excellence and strategic health sector leadership. He currently serves as the Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre, Gusau, and formerly held similar position at Ahmad Sani Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital, Gusau, where his transformative leadership laid the foundation for one of the most advanced tertiary health institutions in the northwestern Nigeria.

Since October 2019, Dr. Bello A. Mohammed has been the steady hand on the wheel of change at the Federal Medical Centre, Gusau—an institution once constrained by limited infrastructure and capacity. Like a master builder, he is laying the foundation of a lasting legacy; he has turned blueprints into bricks and visions into verifiable victories. Under his watch, new structures have risen: as one walks in the Centre, the Dr. Anka Mohammed Kabir Auditorium beams its radiant colour on his face; the Health Information Management Department now likens the brain of the Centre; the Paediatric Surgical Ward, a haven where the smallest lives receive the largest care; and the Physiotherapy Complex, a place where broken limbs find rhythm again.

Under his watch, the Centre established a cutting-edge Molecular Laboratory serves as the Centre’s microscope into the unseen world of disease, while the NHIS Complex ensures access to healthcare flows. Dr Mohammed has given home and hope to budding doctors by building the House Officers’ Quarters. With the completion of a 100-bed Maternity Complex—an edifice that now sings lullabies of survival, he has gifted mothers with a safe space to bring life into the world. The newly created Psychiatric Department offers clarity and calm to troubled minds. Drainages and roads, once a patchwork of obstacles, are now arteries of efficiency, channeling movement and safety. The Isolation Ward stands like a fortified citadel, ready to repel unseen enemies, while the Community Medicine Complex brings the hospital to the people—bridging distance with dignity. The works unit of the Centre now boasts of a serene complex. However, in the pipeline of completion are the new gigantic administrative block and an edifice trauma and emergency complex.

The Centre’s recent achievements go beyond bricks and mortar. Like a sculptor chiseling a masterpiece from raw stone, Dr Bello he has reshaped the Centre’s workforce—cutting down staff attrition and carving out an environment where specialists not only stay but thrive. Staff strength has doubled under his leadership, turning the Centre from a quiet stream into a roaring river of expertise. He planted the seeds of innovation through the automation of health records, replacing paper trails with precision, making data glide through the system like silk through a loom. His commitment to operational excellence also brought gas piping to the facility, giving breath to machineries and then to lungs in the wards. Stability of power supply has made darkness a forgotten visitor. Industrial harmony, once elusive as a shadow at noon, has now been turned into cooperation like iron sharpened into surgical precision. This is a proof of his leadership rooted in dialogue and respect.

His clinical acumen is matched by a deep commitment to healthcare administration. Appointed in 2012 as the pioneer Medical Director of Ahmad Sani Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital, Dr. Bello A. Mohammed transformed it from an empty structure into a fully equipped 150-bed tertiary facility. He recruited over 350 staff, secured key accreditations (MDCN, NHIS, MLSCN), and attracted ₦20 million in equipment donations through local and international partnerships.

Beyond the hospital, Dr. Mohammed’s national service includes roles in the Hajj medical missions, where he served as Chairman of the Zamfara State Medical Team (2005) and as a Member of the Federal Medical Team in Saudi Arabia (2011). He has also been a visiting senior lecturer at the Colleges of Health Sciences, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (since 2016), and Federal University Gusau (since 2024).

He is a Fellow and Member of the West African College of Surgeons, and also belongs to the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Medical and Dental Consultant Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria (SOGON), International Federation of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FIGO), and the Islamic Medical Association of Nigeria (IMAN). His academic contributions include numerous scientific publications and conference presentations in national and international forums.

Dr. Mohammed began his medical career after obtaining his MBBS from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. He completed his housemanship at the university's teaching hospital (UDUTH) in 2002, followed by a year of national service at Abakaliki Local Government Staff Clinic, Ebonyi State. Upon returning to Zamfara, he worked as a Medical Officer at Bakura General Hospital before commencing his residency at UDUTH in 2005. He rose through the ranks to become a Senior Registrar by 2011 and earned his fellowship from the West African College of Surgeons, becoming a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist.
